Professional Development & Collaboration

1. What standard(s)/outcome(s) are being met?

2 B.  Planning, preparation and delivery of technology related in-service programs and instruction in collaboration with other professionals at a variety of instructional levels

2. Identify 1-3 elements of the artifact and explain why/how they demonstrate mastery.

During my internship, I had several opportunities to train teachers and offer technical support in professional development sessions. In the first session,  I helped prepare a Study Island and Google Drive resources presentation for group of elementary school teachers. The work included converting a PowerPoint to a Google slideshow and embedding it into a Google doc presentation for the teacher hosting the academy.  In my next session, I assisted my supervisor, Mr. Champion with teaching the district's support staff, secretaries, and building aides how to use Excel. I also had the opportunity to assist in a Code.org professional development training. I was able to work with 12 of my colleagues specifically on teaching them about binary code, and how it relates to Javascript code. I approached the lesson as I would approach it with an elementary class by having the teachers role play as students. The final session I taught was with a group of elementary teachers that wanted to pull together their combined energy to make online resources for use next school year. I showed them how to take paper assessment from our "Benchmark" ELA curriculum and turn them into online assessments using Google forms with the answer key function.

3. How does, will, or could the content of this artifact benefit your instructional audience or professional community?

The Google Drive resources were collaborative resources for math and ELA that I have been building throughout the school year containing plans, essential questions, and content resources. During the Excel training my audience learned the basics, formatting formulas & functions, and much, much more. This will assist the staff in their day-to-day performance as employees for the district. To assess my Code.org training, I gave my audience binary decoder sheets and had the class figure out how to spell their names in binary code. To wrap up, I had the students make binary code bracelets with their first initials on them. People were amazed at how something so simple could form such complex code. In my collaborative elementary session, the team was amazed at how the Google form could be coded to correct and give feedback as the students take the test. Once everyone was familiar with how to use the form, we delegated the team into groups, assigned units to work on, and started forming online assessments. I will take all of the assessments and compile them on my existing Google Drive folder, and assign them appropriate unit folders. Once complete, I will share them out with the District.

4.  Reflection: What did you learn from the experience when you created the artifact or took the course?

I learned that it is very rewarding working with my colleagues! I love sharing my technical expertise with them and watching them light up as they discover new functions and learn how to make new resources. I must admit that so far, it has been much less of a management challenge working with adult professionals than elementary-aged children.
